Museum Monday on a Thursday!
Where to start? Let me just list some things…a quick trip to The Elbo Room (now The Book Club) on Lincoln Ave to look at a cash register, the original neon (broken), and a piece of the bar – complete with beer taps! The Elbo Room was definitely one of the places where newer artists would cut their teeth – it provided a starting point for Veruca Salt and more.
Tuesday was an amazing visit with my old drum tech, Bart Flores, who celebrated his daughter’s 15th birthday here! Bart hand-painted the Welcome To Mexico tapestry backdrop and the Murder Inc backdrop that went to the UK with us in 1991/1992. I managed to find some video footage of Murder Inc in London with Bart squeezed in between me and big Paul, ready to fix whatever we broke (and you know we did!)
Yesterday Bob Weston contacted me to see if I would like the ¼” tape machine he used for over a decade with Mission Of Burma: “Mission of Burma were pivotal in shaping the American post-punk sound of the early 1980s, blending art-rock sensibilities with raw punk energy. Their dense guitar textures, tape loops, and politically charged lyrics anticipated elements of industrial and noise rock.” ….OK then!
Then, we got word that 4 commercial screens are being donated with automation to populate them! (thanks Gary!). After that, Eileen Minkoff stopped by with this insane carpet sculpture that used to hang at legendary Chicago club TUTS!! (I just acquired a flyer for Joy Division at Tuts!)
So, when I say, “it just won’t stop!” could you possibly give me the benefit of the damn doubt here and just nod your head? Chicago and the 18 wheeled juggernaut of industrial music is being documented here, piece by piece!
Come visit! There are (mis)guided tours with me Friday evening, Saturday, this coming Monday, and all throughout the summer (all linked below!!). Also, I’ll be speaking and spinning as part of the Brian Shanley’s “I Was There — An Experience in Photography” – a photo exhibit event at 317 art collective in Rockford, IL the evening of Aug 1st, open to the public! You can find more details about that HERE.
Meanwhile, in an effort to try and keep everyone’s spirits up – I am continuing the free shirt Friday event all this weekend! (Online Store Here)
Please be nice, be awesome, and don’t let the fuckers grind you down !
peace love and much respect
