Museum Monday: Recent Reflections from Martin
MUSEUM MONDAY REFLECTIONS w MARTIN:
There are so many things to talk about this week – some I will save for another day. I want to talk about the Museum for a little bit and how it feels to me…
So often in the music business we have an idea for a song, a band or an album and we spend so much time and energy pushing, pushing and pushing and then pushing. It feels impossible, fruitless sometimes – miraculous others. Certainly that has been true for this insane idea of the museum.
It felt like I was putting a carefully made, fragile toy sailboat into the still waters of a pond, and I started to blow into the sails to help give it some speed and make some ripples. I blew and blew (and blew) – so hard sometimes it made me dizzy. Then, I felt the blast of air from others joining in. At some point, I looked up to the horizon and saw that the little wooden toy boat seemed to have become larger and more powerful, with an engine? and it started to make a wake behind it as it picked up speed. I looked down and saw a rope around my foot grow tight as I was pulled in and started to surf on top of the water, pulled along by the momentum. Now, I am skiing across this lake, waving. (not Lake Michigan, although the weather is nice today, the imaginary lake in this story of momentum)…
It is such a rare rare feeling for an idea to pull us along, but, with the help of so many many of you, that is what is happening. I don’t feel as though I have a choice in this any longer (I’m not sure that I ever did) and so many of you with kind words, visits, contributions and generous donations have made this thing happen. What a fabulous testament to a scene that DIY’s the hell out of everything that we DIY’d the fuck out of this too. What a gift!
THANKYOU!
In the meantime, the new postcard set needs to be celebrated, I think – photos from Jodi Sargent, Bobby Talamine and myself designed by the amazing Shani Goss show some more sides of the place. Albini’s 1/4” tape machine, stills of Genesis from their Pigface intro video, PiL raincoat, shirts, nuns, a couple of Trent Reznor’s passport photographs, and even a screen printed sandpaper one to mess up the USPS! Wow, now we have a tote bag and a postcard set – we are really becoming a museum! Time for another Bring-Your-Dog-to-the-Museum-Day so we can mess the floors up with excited dog piss! Come visit when you can, and thanks so much for your support.
I’m going to spend some time at the museum today looking at Mont Sherar’s book Twilight of the Mortals – he passed earlier this week and I’ll be writing about our times together later on.
Be nice, be as awesome as you fucking can be because it makes a difference, and you have no idea what anyone is going through.
much love
Martin
