The first album I played on
The Metal Box from PiL:
3×12” singles in a round metal container with the logo embossed into the lid, and object lesson in objects and certainly set the packaging bar high. It infected me I think (in a good way). Two early releases on invisible in 1988 and 1989 were the compilation album in a screen printed shopping bag then Bizarre Sex Trio – a limited run of 750 4 song 12” singles – each cover with unique color combinations! Then, I started to collect unusual releases and incorporate these into my packaging lectures. This stuff is in my blood.
In 2004 when I saw these black extruded plastic 4”x4” sections at a hardware store I rushed to the label to see if the pre-cut pieces would fit on a cd – they did! So we made a mock up and presold the CDs through our distribution at Caroline/EMI. When it came time to manufacture the digipacks, we found that the small pieces had been discontinued (of course ! Supply chain and Murphy’s law!!). I ended up speaking with the owners of the company in Canada who agreed to ship me some larger sheets as a one time only special favor.
Fast forward 18 years. A couple of random things collide to make this new release possible …… a visit to the Museum from the Smashed Plastic Pressing Plant team made me want to showcase all of our cool releases, so I went hunting for some of the CDs and found some of the original 2’ x 2’ sheets from which the CDs were cut. Later that day during the visit to the museum we decided we had to put this on vinyl with 11” x 11” artwork on the sleeve.
It. Looks. Amazing.
The songs have been re-mastered by Tom Whittaker and, with Chris & Steve’s blessing, we are already in the production process. This truly is a LIMITED EDITION – I think we can make 200-225 possibly, just a few more or less, depending on how the process goes and how many we screw up in assembly. So I’m putting up a pre- order of 200 on 160g Red Vinyl!
There’s a couple of stripped down cool remixes and a remix track from members of Can, too, from the album that will be in your inbox in the next couple of weeks. The package includes a signed by me original CD insert/poster with a terrific pic from Michelle Walters – Seibold from the original CD release, and a reproduction ‘I Heart Damage’ pass.
