Museum Monday: Updates to the TKK Collection + More
I don’t think there has been a single week in the last few years when the museum hasn’t added items of significance to the archives, and this last week is no exception. As we start to prepare for Thrill Kill Kult Day, Paulie Gladden stopped by (with friends David and Billy) to allow us to scan his archive of Kult Konnection newsletters – many of them received when he was stationed in Europe. Frankie’s handwriting, literally and figuratively, is all over these – you can go on a time warp trip and watch as their European dates unfold, fashion tips and more from the world’s most dangerous Kult. I also got to sit with Paulie and talk about the blurring of the lines between house music and industrial back in the day – areas we had talked about a little with Michael Kolar last week, but this time from the consumer side, Paulie being surprised and delighted by the Ministry evolution from synth pop and becoming infected with industrial for life.
At the end of our chat, Paulie donated the newsletters to the museum which have already been archivally scanned (yay interns all summer!), along with the recent acquisition of the ’13 Above The Night’ podium and other artifacts that include photographs, demos, 5 original Groovie Mann paintings, the New Years Eve banner from 1990 when the Smashing Pumpkins opened for TKK at the Metro (the same night that Killing Joke and The Revolting Cocks played The Vic) shirts, posters, a TKK promotional FRISBEE!!! All of this and more make the collection deep enough to satisfy more than the casual TKK fan!
I think I end lots of these #MuseumMondays with words about how fueling the museum has been to all of us – (especially me) as the collection grows the knowledge base, the treasury of stories grows too. I know I have mentioned this before, but I’m reminded that, although the large important objects are significant, Genesis P. Orridge’s lederhosen, the earliest NiN demos, my kit from Killing Joke, Ministry cage tour, #HLAH and more, Sandy Powell suits, Test Department hub cap marimba, Coil, Neubauten, Skinny Puppy – sometimes it’s the in between moments, the human stories, that are actually the glue that holds this all together and elevates this into a more meaningful experience
Thanks everyone, thanks Paulie!
