Happy Father’s Day! Free Shirt Weekend!

(almost) Free Shirt Friday

It’s a fabulously fueling and interesting time at the Museum right now! We have 12 interns from all over the country: Millikin, Columbia College Chicago, DePaul, ISU, USC and more! I took some time on Tuesday to show a spreadsheet and explain the importance that hand screening posters from the David J event meant to the event and the budget (and to on-going activities). Yesterday, I made sure to also make sure they know about different types of plaster. SURE – it’s convenient and smooth (in every way) to get a tub of pre-mixed plaster – but – did you know you can also get different types that dry in 20, 45 and 90 minutes? Of course, you have to mix (and that takes a minute or two)… BUT – this can mean the difference between two coats of plaster going on in an afternoon – or not!

I’m sure many small museums either are great at marketing and events and struggle at archival, OR are great at archival but have an empty space. In addition to trying to cross pollinate these different halves of the equation, I’m also going to try and develop a kind of essential tool kit for museum-preneurs (or any small business owner.) Onwards and upwards.

Anyway, its also #FREESHIRTFRIDAY – go get one!!

AND Monday is Founders Meet Founders at the Museum! so if you are a founder and in the Chicago area – come on down – it is one of my favourite hangs of the year and if you aren’t a Founder……why not?!?!?!?

Love YA

ICYMI MUSEUM MONDAY:

What a Wonderful Weekend!

THIS last weekend was JUST the kind of weekend I’d hope for in a Museum – looking back, looking forwards, new relationships, old relationships nurtured and honored and more joy in this wonderful community.

Let me just list everything out…

Well, damn, David J at the Museum for a Q&A was just spectacular! We were born just two years and thirty-eight miles apart, and there’s a wonderful shorthand that happens with us post-punk brits that’s delightful. It’s weird, it doesn’t need a ‘remember the xxxxx and the xxxxxx’ it’s just part of the fabric, the nasty journalists, the John Peel show etc. I LOVE that I don’t have a new album or anything really to push so I can ask and LISTEN!  I learned after asking the question – “what shitty jobs have you had?” that David spent time as an ice cream van driver – not truck deliveries, but the actual guy driving around with the tunes (which he slowed down), playing out of the mangled Tannoy loudspeakers! We ended up at the amazingly hospitable Electric Funeral Bar. If you missed the event and live stream, you can catch a short clip HERE! If you’re interested in a copy of David’s book of poetry, you can find that HERE!

Many people have asked about the lovely hand screened posters I printed for the event – they are available here.

Then Saturday was a blur of meetings, Museum tours and a jam session with Hobomouth band – it was good for me to have people tinkering with electronics and telephones and projectors and jumping up and down on the main floor and good for my drumming brain to re remember what it’s all about. The Museum has felt so alive this last week.

As if all of that wasn’t enough – we set up at the 50th Anniversary of The Alley block party on Sunday with a crew of interns and goodwill all around. Mark has been in the middle of all of this for 50 years and I was thrilled and humbled to be a small part if the proceedings.

We managed to get some great content for the Patreon AND send a free invite to our patrons – it was just a terrific weekend all around! Thank you to Briana, Maria, Parker, Peter, Oscar, Dylan, Katie, Becca, Mike and everyone that made it all possible!!!

I am so excited for the next three months! Fathers Day Saturday tours are on fire and a great break from Motoblot, if you are in the neighbourhood!!
