Martin’s Museum Updates
Whenever there is a group of people coming in for a tour, I’ll ask where everyone is from. Wednesday was just 5 people – from Vegas and Denver – then I’ll usually ask, “What brings you to Chicago?” More and more, the answer is, “This!” That’s bonkers and humbling. Someone asked me yesterday, “doesn’t that intimidate you then? are you worried?” Easy answer – nope!
This place has grown so much in the last year (exponentially)! It’s all killer, no filler and the stories and connections keep growing too. The gift shop is full of amazing items and rare vinyl, the fridge is usually full, the Marazocco espresso machine and Dark Matter Coffee are at the ready, and if people aren’t mesmerized by the time they finish at the top of the stairs – they will be after 45 minutes in the studio below! The collection of related and unreleased material down there has also been growing – from unreleased PiL (both nights of my first gigs on Paris, unreleased Flowers tracks and mixes, 7 versions of Love Song and more), to the earliest NiN demos (Nov 1985 I think), NiN live that Ninarchive doesn’t have, Thrill Kill Kult, Killing Joke, Skinny Puppy and so much more! Plus now, all of the albums that have been made right there in my studio: Chemlab, Chris Connelly, Gravity Kills, Pigface, Damage Manual, China Dub Soundsystem, Snapline, and more.
Throw in the Bridgeport neighborhood, with a new record store across the street from the other one, a tremendous bookstore Tangible, Jackalope Coffee, Electric Funeral Bar, The Ramova, and it’s becoming a day out ! Don’t take my word for it – here’s what a few people have said:
An incredible documentation, of some of the most important items from a rarely preserved era. (Brian Dickie)
An industrial music dream (Elizabeth Vodevic)
This should be on your bucket list. (Ryan Cardenas)
A secret stash of music history and memorabilia more-than-worthy of the Smithsonian. (Julie Niehoff)
Continues the punk ethos even in a museum setting – allowing guests to actually touch and interact with the objects. (Gisselle S Tipp)
The Post Punk Louvre! (Nick Zinner)
Unlike any museum I’ve visited. I can’t wait to come back. (Greg Lunsford)
I was there for 3 hrs and still not enough time to SEE IT ALL. (Brigette Golson)
5 stars, two thumbs up, 100% loved it. (Robert Carter)
The heart of everything Post Punk & Industrial, it’s just a magical place to be. (Jon Frasher)
No trip to Chicago feels complete without a visit. (Steven Olaf)
A home for all of us misfit kids, who didn’t quite fit in. (Sara Jane Whitewater)
The highlight of our trip from Dublin. (Cregg Elder-Mullan)
Thankyou for building The Church of US! (Anonymous – online)
A musical shrine as (un)holy & powerful as they get (Elia Einhorn)
A stunning project with the most unique and authentic treasures we’ve ever seen! (Smashed Plastic, Chicago)
One of my favorite experiences of all time! (Chris Magdelenski)
Best afternoon in memory! (Pretty in Pink Flamingos )
You have waaaaaay more NiN stuff than the RRHOF! (recent visitors)
Come visit during one of our events, book a private guided tour for 8 if you want at another time (HERE), support us by bidding on the current auctions or just by sharing this newsletter! And, if you can, go see my old PiL and Damage Manual band mate, Jah Wobble, currently on tour in the US HERE!
