A Sad Anniversary, Upcoming Events, + More

We are coming up on a sad anniversary…

Someone who was a huge inspiration for the start of the Museum was Nipsey Hussle, who released Crenshaw as a free download – but also as a $100 mixtape. Honestly, I’m constantly learning STILL and certainly was back then – I thought the idea was doomed. Then Jay Z bought 100 and in an instant (well, 24 hours) they were sold out. Punk AF really, don’t wait for permission. DIY AF = $100,000. He called it Proud To Pay, genius fucking genius – When most artists were just whining about Spotify streaming rates.

He started his clothing company Marathon and opened the physical store in Crenshaw to create opportunity for his community. He then bought the shopping center where the store was located as he diversified into real estate. Tragically, & he was shot dead almost four years ago now, March 31st 2019. Seems like he had so much more to do and so many more to inspire.
So, all of this was banging around in my head when I started to think about the museum. They say the best way to learn is to teach? Well, yes, and almost two years ago now (April 21st 2021), I announced the $125 founders t-shirt with access to events at the museum.

To say that the evolution of the museum has been one of the most inspirational, fueling, humbling, learning, growing, emotional, educational and joyful experience of my life is not an understatement – and it still continues to do that.

Damn – he just did it again:
“You gotta go hard, you gotta believe in yourself. You gotta have a sense of humor to know that the bullshit is gonna happen, you can’t be too serious about it or too emotional and fake when the bullshit happens. You gotta just stick to the script, believe and have an overwhelming confidence. Be your own biggest fan, your own biggest believer, and put it on your back and carry the weight.” NH

Thanks Nipsey

“be your own biggest fan!”
